Listening to My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy for the first time and I have to remark upon Kanye‘s ability to create a spectacle of himself while simultaneously focusing on making good music. Often artists seem to choose between being publicly engaging or musical auteurs. Acting as if being open outside the medium precludes really focusing on the music or focusing on the music means you must live the life of a semi-hedonistic monk, Kanye himself has been guilty of the latter too until he opened up his media rehab tour at the Google and Facebook offices. The two qualities are not mutually exclusive though and it seems that the common distinguishing characteristic that defines today’s superstars is the ability to appear as publicly engaging as possible while still being able to deliver quality product and may I add in a timely fashion, this can be viewed perfectly in Jay-Z‘s decision to publish his kinda-sorta biography “Decoded”. Enough with the meta commentary though this album bangs.
